Arthur & Henry

Arthur & Henry believe that every man needs a good shirt. A shirt he can trust to feel comfortable and confident in. A shirt he can be proud to wear.

Arthur Lissaman and Henry Shiel founded their company to provide men of the world with beautiful, classic, ethical shirts – crafted from organic cotton. Both men lived in an age where a shirt was every man’s best friend, seeing him through a day at work, an evening meal, or a family celebration. Henry was even known to wear a shirt when digging coal from the earth with his bare hands!

Arthur Lissaman and Henry Shiel founded their company to provide men of the world with beautiful, classic, ethical shirts – crafted from organic cotton. Arthur & Henry create shirts inspired by an era when clothes were just that little bit smarter, and a shirt would last for years. These shirts are good shirts. They’re good for the environment and good for the people who’ve helped make them – from the cotton grower to the tailor, and from the weaver to the dyer.

The company’s ethics are simple – do less harm and do more good. They only use organic cotton and the finest quality linen. Conventional cotton is grown using huge quantities of pesticides, insecticides, and toxins. Organic cotton, on the other hand, uses agricultural methods which sustain the soil it grows in. Farmers don't have to handle toxic chemicals, worry about them entering their water supply or get into debt buying them. Arthur & Henry’s organic cotton comes from the Pratima Organic Farmers group in Balangir, Odisha and Chetna Organic, India. Many of the company’s cotton shirts now carry the Fairtrade mark.

The fashion industry is renowned for exploitation and poor working conditions. All suppliers involved in processing Arthur & Henry cotton shirts are audited against the Global Organic Textile Standard social criteria, and all shirt factories have been audited against a variety of high criteria codes too. Arthur & Henry shirts are produced in a small factory in Bangalore, by tailors who are among the most skilled in the local area. Transparent through and through, Arthur & Henry is incredibly proud of its suppliers, and is happy to share their details with anyone who asks!

Ever eco-conscious, Arthur & Henry shirts arrive in the UK in compostable bio-degradable 'poly' bags, which can then be re-used in kitchen compost buckets. Some shirts are still in plastic polybags, and these can be recycled. All tissue packaging is FSC certified or recycled, and the cardboard boxes they use for shipping are also FSC certified too!

In addition to all of this, Arthur & Henry pledge to give 1% of its turnover every year to charity. Amazing.
