An unmistakeably Peruvian nativity scene, with a llama featuring amongst the eight hand-painted ceramic figures. The craftspeople working with Allpa have access to loans, enabling them to buy raw materials to create handicrafts like these. Made in Peru by Allpa
Fair Trade Producer Details Allpa is a private company owned by a development NGO, set up to market fair trade crafts for producers in various parts of Peru, now especially around Lima and the Cuzco area. They give advances/loans and design advice. There are about 700 producers in 100 groups, almost all are workshops run by extended families.
Traidcraft is a comparatively small purchaser now, but was one of Allpa's first two export customers in the 1980s, which helped them develop the skills to get into the ordinary commercial market.
"We are building, little by little, a different world based on human relationships. It is a permanent process. We would like to encourage people in the UK to learn more about our culture and history, it would help our relationship to grow. Fair trade helps to maintain a permanent relationship and helps people in the UK to know about the poorest people and other cultures." Nelly Canepa and Maria del Carmen de la Fuenta, Allpa, Peru.
