A rich fruit cake made with fairly traded sultanas from Eksteenskuil in South Africa and fair trade sugar from Kasinthula in Malawi. Perfect for afternoon tea.
Fair Trade Sugar The Kasinthula Cane Growers Association (KCG) is Traidcraft's new sugar supplier. In February 2004, Traidcraft's Market Access Centre ran a Trading Fairly Workshop for 33 farmers to introduce them to fair trade, Traidcraft and how their premium committee could operate. As a result, in March 2004, the village of Kapasule gained its own supply of safe, clean water from a borehole paid for with the fair trade premium.
Joyce Chibouro is 21 and lives and farms with her parents in the village of Chinangwa. She says: "We want to encourage the women in the UK to continue buying the products made with our sugar, because we are working extra hard in the fields to produce the best sugar cane. When you buy, you are helping us to improve our livelihoods."
Our sultanas and raisins come from the Orange River region of South Africa. The area is isolated and dry, as it is near the Kalahari Desert. Many crops are unprofitable, but farmers can get a decent income from growing grapes and drying them. The problem for small farmers is that it takes three years before the first crop and they need training and financial help to get started.
