South African raisins surrounded by silky milk chocolate.
Fair Trade Fruit Our fair trade raisins come from the Orange River region of South Africa. The area is isolated and dry, as it is near the Kalahari Desert. Many crops are unprofitable, but farmers can get a decent income from growing grapes and drying them. The problem for small farmers is that it takes three years before the first crop and they need training and financial help to get started.
"Through Fairtrade and Kuapa we now have a lot of progress. We have good drinking water, toilet facilities and schools. Kuapa pay the farmers on time and there is no cheating." - Comfort Kwaasibea.
Fair Trade Chocolate Kuapa Kokoo is a co-op union of 937 village societies, representing about 40,000 farmers. They currently sell about 650 tonnes of cocoa to the fair trade market each year.
Fair Trade Sugar The Kasinthula Cane Growers' Association (KCG) is Traidcraft's new sugar supplier. In February 2004, Traidcraft's Market Access Centre ran a Trading Fairly Workshop for 33 farmers to introduce them to fair trade, Traidcraft and how their premium committee could operate. As a result, in March 2004, the village of Kapasule gained its own supply of safe, clean water from a borehole paid for with the fair trade premium.
