Located in Mombasa, Bombolulu Workshops for the Handicapped was founded in 1969 as a rehabilitation centre. The project has grown over the years and has four sheltered workshops supporting 160 physically disabled craftsmen and women. Bombolulu assists in developing the skills and abilities of its workforce who come from all parts of Kenya, and it is now one of the biggest rehabilitation centres in Kenya. The workers have formed their own savings and loan co-operative and in 1993 Bombolulu introduced a medical aid scheme.

"Omar Ali is 35 years old and is from the Tana River District. He suffered from Polio in 1975, which resulted in his disability. He later heard about how Bombolulu had helped the handicapped and was eager to be part of this group of privileged disabled."

"In 1992 he joined Bombolulu as a leather artisan. He works together with other artisans to produce different leather products and canvas material. He is pleased to work in Bombolulu and now he is capable of supporting his family and can also save for the future of his children." Omar Ali, Bombolulu, Kenya.
