Traidcraft's fair trade organic pasta is made in Italy from durum wheat and fairly traded quinoa flour, a traditional cereal grown on the high slopes of the Andes in South America.
Fair Trade Food The farmers who produce the quinoa used in Traidcraft's pasta are members of Anapqui. Anapqui is the umbrella organisation of seven regional cooperatives. Most producers also cultivate potatoes and beans for the own families and keep llamas or sheep. Anapqui pays them a good price and this helps them to stay in their home area when others have to migrate in search of a better income.
The main variety of quinoa sold by Anapqui is called Quinoa Real. It is cultivated at an altitude of 12,000 feet near the Uyuni salt lake, the largest salt lake in the world, and an old volcano cone, which influence the conditions of the soil in the region. These soil properties together with the altitude and sunshine give the quinoa a high nutritional value.
