Rich and intense organic plain chocolate, made with organic cocoa beans from Bolivia and organic muscovado sugar from the Philippines. Perfect for fair trade chocolate connoisseeurs.
Traidcraft's organic chocolate contains cocoa grown by small farmers in the Alto Beni region of Bolivia. This area was originally rain forest, which was settled in the '70s by Indian families from the Andes. Co-operative groups began and in 1978 the umbrella organisation El Ceibo was formed. It is a federation of 37 co-operatives, with about 900 members in total.
"Well, the cocoa price was very low and when the Co-operative was created we were interested in joining in order to be able to sell our crops at a higher price. The tradesmen used to buy from us at whatever price they established. This was the way we joined. The co-op buy our crop at a high price." "Members also get a little bonus at the end of the year. We have the technicians' support and they visit us once every two months. With money we can improve a little. The good thing about the Co-operative is that with the contract we have for selling the crop is secure and that gives us peace of mind." - Emilio Gonzalez.
El Ceibo's exports are now worth over $1million a year and the cocoa growers benefit from a range of services including transport, technical training, credit, and research and extension services. Selected members are sent to study abroad or in Bolivian universities.
