Fair Trade Producer Details
GKK provides regular employment for around 100 women embroiderers, who are paid twenty-five to thirty percent above the normal rate for the region and also benefit from the setting up of their own bank accounts. GKK provides other benefits, such as paying medical expenses and providing some literacy and health education for workers.

Women work in their own homes, collecting fabrics and threads from GKK and then returning the finished pieces. Tailoring is completed by family groups, primarily male. A number of items in Traidcraft's current clothing range come from GKK.

Hakum Chand learnt his tailoring skills at a young age when his father who was a soldier with the border security force retired. Hakum now works at GKK with his wife Hira Devi who helps him by stitching buttons and making buttonholes as well as checking finished garments.

"With money earned in the last few years I have been able to buy a few machines and have employed two assistants to help me with my work" he says. "We used to work at home, but my children needed a quieter place to be able to do their homework. With the money we have earned we have been able to rent a one room flat, as a result my children's grades at school are much better".
