Fair Trade Producer Details
Aravali, based in the culturally-rich state of Rajasthan, was set up in 1979, and initially only exported clothing to Traidcraft. Today Aravali promotes traditional products made by local craftspeople.
It works with more artisans, for example, potters and groups producing hand-painted furniture and ornaments and a wide range of textiles. Block-printed fabric comes from two small businesses in Bagru.
Aravali acts as exporter for another regular supplier of rugs to Traidcraft - Desert Artisans. DAH is based in Jodhpur in West India. It provides design, raw materials and a market to the rural artisans. Traidcraft assists Aravali by providing design development and export markets.
"Ganesh is a colour master and head of the workshop, which he owns. He gets to work early in the morning (around 7.00am) and first prepares the dyes and colours which are needed for the day. The other workers arrive between 8.30am and 9.00am.
After explaining the day's work plan to them, he goes to his plot of land to work the fabric. He owns a scooter and hopes to own a jeep sometime. He wants his children to finish high school and says that his son can decide for himself whether he would like to become a printer or not."
